Portal and choir of St Castulus' Minster

Portal (c. 41 kbytes) The Romanesque west portal of St Castulus' Minster is richly ornamented with columns and archivolts. The lintel is 19th century.

Portal (c. 52 kbytes) The portal has a tympanum with the figures of Christ in the middle, and St Mary and St Castulus on his sides. On the left is Emperor Heinrich (Henry) II holding a candle, on the right the Bishop Adalbert (Albert) of Freising under whose reign the Minster was built from 1171 on. He dedicates a model of the church.

Portal (c. 35 kbytes) The capital of the left side pillar is carved with a pair of doves on a pine cone, a dancer and a flautist. Above them, a lion guards the entrance.

Choir (c. 43 kbytes) In 1468 the Romanesque apse of the Minster was replaced by a high rising late Gothic choir. Duke Ludwig der Reiche (Louis the Rich) of Bavaria-Landshut laid foundation-stone of the choir built by a master named Seitz. The visible brick walls and the painted tracery freeze below the roof follow the tradition of St Martin's Church in Landshut. Next to the chancel are the apse of the south aisle and St Ursula's Chapel.
